Travel Journal - Pompeii

Drive through Naples

Our tour guide explained Pizza Margherita, traffic, laid back optimistic attitude, poverty level (25% unemployment). Traffic stories, fender benders, after checking the damage, drivers shake hands and move on.

Flowering Florence

The bus ride gave us an opportunity to see more of the countryside and take a little nap. I am so glad I will have time to myself soon. A full week in one location is going to be a nice change of pace.

Pompeii

As usual there was so much to see and so little time.

Pompeii is very impressive. Some of their technical solutions were fascinating. Using white stones in the roads, especially in the road entering the city, to reflect moonlight. Raised platform stones for crossing the streets during the rains are simple and eloquent.

The renovations and reconstructions are deliberately different to show what original parts have remained.

The homes are built around gardens. And the xrated art  on the walls in petite rooms off the kitchen definitely gave the impression that these areas really cooked!

Party city

Wine vats in open bars throughout the central section of the city. And if the wine doesn't get you, the lead water pipes will. Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. did an impressive job of preservation. The art, the buildings, even the corpses are well preserved.
