Florence ¦ Firenze

San Lorenzo and Capello Medici

Another great place for marble with a dome and back rooms filled with religious artifacts. Michelangelo Medici tombs with Dawn, Night and Day.

Bapistry

A mosaic ceiling of the dome to amaze most anyone. Although I heard a man say it was just another dark building. You can't please them all. This is the same place that has Ghilberti´s Gates of Paradise.

Lovers of the Sea

Palazzo Pitti · wow

It was as impressive in a different way as the Uffizi. I can´t begin to describe the decadence of this palace. I only went through one of the three museums within these walls. The art and the apartments.

The walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, windows, doors and the spectacular paintings and sculptures. Raphael, Allori, Sebastine, Parmiagna, Vasari, Tintoretti and and and .. all amazing and brought tears to my eyes. Actually this was the first time, I truly appreciated Raphael. Photos of paintings are truly inadequate. Seeing Raphael's Madonna and Child took my breath away. I tried to walk away from it and found myself backtracking to look at it just one more time. The Pitti is a relaxed atmosphere that gave me all the time I needed to examine everything I wanted. So very different from the Uffizi where the number of people dictated the speed of the viewing.

Being on my own, I economized and went with the recommendation of the tour guide. He was a gem and helped me stay within my budget. It was a good size room with bathroom including tub and a view of Duomo! No air conditioning, nor TV, thank goodness, and no soap. The church bells are great and the view alone makes it!

I learned the original reason for bells on the hour was to let the people who were mostly illiterate, know the time. The clergy were the only educated ones and were responsible for ringing the bells.

I must include a note on Italian restrooms. Some have buttons on the wall for flushing, some plastic boxes that you push. A restaurant had a seat that you had to bring down and sit quick or it would go back up and mist the seat.

But the best was at the Palazzo Vecchio where you straddle with porcelain runners on each side. It was very low to the ground and had no seat what so ever.

All the bathrooms require money to be given to the attendant, but the adventure is worth it.

Arrivederci

Ciao Michelangelo

Last day in Firenze. And Italia. I couldn´t imagine leaving. I sat in Duomo for the last time, that trip, trying desperately to soak in as much as I could. Had my last tiramiso gelate. I didn't see it all, but I gave it a marvelous shot.
